Retractable bollards from Reliance Foundry are selected to provide protection in the renovation and expansion project in Santa Monica, California

Reliance Foundry is pleased to announce their part in bringing the Museum of Flying back to the people of California. The
Museum of Flying is the newest addition to an already busy list of things-to-do at the Santa Monica Airport. This municipal airport park is alive with sports activities, concerts, fundraisers, restaurants, and markets. This year, the municipal airport has added a new family adventure spot in the $4 million renovation and expansion of The Museum of Flying.
The Museum of Flying’s new home at the Santa Monica Airport will display an exhibit area of nearly 22,000 square feet. Visitors will find nearly 2 dozen aircraft chronicling the beginning of flight: from a replica Wright Flyer, all the way to the jet age, with the BD-5 micro jet and the FedEx 727 nose section. The Museum will also present a broad collection of aviation art, rare artifacts, and ephemera from famous aviators.
Stainless bollards match the style of the building and have a modern look
Stainless steel
series 8400 retractable bollards from Reliance Foundry were selected to provide various perimeter protection and security on the property.
The
model R-8410 bollard is fixed, meaning once it is installed it is not movable. The
model R-8421 bollard is retractable. Both were selected to be used in this project.
The retractable model R-8421 requires a key to unlock the bollard, allowing it to be lowered into a receiver in the ground. The photo below shows that once the bollards are lowered, they are flush with the pavement. In an area like the outside of an airport, a row of retractable bollards are needed to allow for an airplane to be transported when necessary. They also protect unauthorized vehicles from entry into protected areas.
Retractable bollards lower completely into the ground.
Retractable bollards are often used to deter intrusion, divert traffic, and define routes or roadways. They are easily raised, but require a key to lower. The model no. R-8410 fixed bollards, and model no. R-8421 retractable bollards are complimentary in style so they work together to be used on the same property, providing cohesiveness in design.

The bollards can be powder-coated in a selection of standard colors. The Museum of Flying chose to have the bollards provided in a sleek stainless steel finish that works well with the style of the building, and is a modern styling that reflects well the advancements of the aerospace industry.
The Museum had been closed down in 2002 for economic reasons, and the reopening and relocation is an important step in acknowledging that although times have been tough, history has not been forgotten. The renovation and airport expansion pays tribute to the aviation visionaries of California that have made significant contributions to the advancement of Aviation and Aerospace fields. Reliance Foundry is grateful to be a part of this important project.
